Weezer. I grew up listening to Weezer. I learned to play guitar to Weezer. I attempted to learn to sing to Weezer.
Needless to say this hits all the nostalgia buttons for me. It’s also got some quite clever lyrics. Even with this I feel like I should like this album more. It was listed in Rolling Stone as a top 50 album of 2014. It’s good, but I don’t know if it’s that good.
Like I said there are some clever lines. From talking about selling out as a rock star, to exclaiming that girls are so complicated Stephen Hawking couldn’t figure them out. There are also a couple of weak songs. Cleopatra and The British are Coming seem a bit out of place here, and seem to be relying solely on sounding like old Weezer to work.
Overall not a bad album. Could be better, but as it is it’s still a solid example of how good music used to be.
